Artists in Residence

Annual Conference 2008

You will be delighted to engage with daily Artists in Residence at Annual Conference Session this year. To call us to the awareness of God’s gift of creativity, we will receive the gift of artistic expression in varying and uplifting ways.

A dedicated working area on the conference floor will be given to these artists in order that they may demonstrate their art form and that you may engage with them. In addition, participants at conference will have the opportunity to be directly involved with the artist and his or her medium. What a feast of creativity will be available to us!

Ms. Hilda Robinson, painter, has prepared 30 monumental paintings for the plenary and worship space. She will serve as Wednesday’s Artist in Residence. Her original work expresses the creativity and joy that comes with praising God and extending Christ’s invitation to a joyous life. Visit www.amitmay.com. We know that you will enjoy Hilda’s paintings during ACS – and you’ll also have an opportunity to take one home at the close of Conference, to share with your congregation and enjoy year round. Fifteen paintings will be available for purchase each day on Thursday and Friday, at the start of the lunch break. Paintings will be sold on a “first come, first served” basis. Visit the “Artist in Residence” station on the conference floor for further details, along with order forms and a complete list of the paintings available for purchase.

Rev. Mark Bollwinkel is a devoted “garage potter” with an eclectic view and variety of experience. Mark offers his gifts of expression as Thursday’s Artist in Residence. Many of you are familiar with Mark’s work and his celebration with others in retreat settings honoring creativity. Visit www.pastorpotter.com.

Dr. L. Martina Young, dancer, will have everyone moving in order to stimulate our own creative expression of joy and promise in Jesus Christ. Along with serving as Friday’s Artist in Residence, Dr. Young will join in the Bishop’s Retirement Celebration event in the evening, as she brings forth her original expression of Scripture in movement. Visit www.theaestheticbody.com.

Ms. Charlene Virts, hand weaver, graces Saturday with Artist in Residence skills at the loom. Charlene never tires of “playing with texture and color because there are so many options and directions that any woven piece can take you.” Custom liturgical pieces as well as silk and chenille scarves are among her current projects. Visit www.artisansco-op.com/cvirts.html.

We are grateful for the gifts of these artists, whom God has blessed in abundance that we may be inspired to claim our creative gifts as well. Rev. Jeff Kunkel serves as curator of the Artful Presence at Annual Conference. Jeff is a published author and artist in his own right. We thank him for his stimulating ideas and development of our theme.
